This year’s cover model

November 23, 2011

By now you have probably seen the lovely Western Scrub-Jay photo on the cover of this year’s Winter Bird Highlights (you can download it here).  The photo was taken by FeederWatcher Kathie Johnston.  Kathie shared with us a little more about this jay, who is apparently quite a character!  She writes:

“We were so thrilled to see ‘our’ jay on the cover of the Winter Bird Highlights. It has become a part of our family. It has been hanging around our yard and deck since it fledged in 2010. We started giving it a few peanuts each day and now when it sees us in the morning it flies up to get its breakfast. We split our time between Albany, California, and La Pine, Oregon, so there are periods of up to three weeks when we are not here but it always comes when we get back.”

“There are other jays in the area but this is the only one that will come close. In fact, last month it actually came into the house to get some peanuts. Somehow it figured where we kept the nuts–on the dryer next to the back door. We keep the door open so our dog can go in and out so one day it flew in to get a nut. It came in a several times before we moved the nuts. I didn’t want it to get hurt trying to get out in a hurry.”

Kathie also shared another fun photo of the jay with us.  Thanks, Kathie!

Neat story! Since I’m in the northeast, I really enjoy hearing stories about western birds.
